Man missing on Shenandoah

Man missing on Shenandoah Mountain

MONTEREY — Augusta County officers and search and rescue personnel are searching for a man missing since Monday in Augusta, near the Highland County border.

According to Highland Sheriff Tim Duff, the investigation is strictly Augusta’s, though he has one deputy assisting from Highland today (Friday, Nov. 16).

Apparently a man and woman parked at the lot on top of Shenandoah at the border, went hiking near the breastworks, then returned to the lot, when the man discovered his cell phone was missing.

The man returned to look for his phone and has not been seen since.

Duff said he is roughly 60 years old, with several medical issues; the nights here have been very cold.

Meanwhile, a hunter had found the phone, and mailed it to the man’s home address.

Augusta officials confirmed the car parked at the breastworks belonged to the missing man, and towed it away.

Duff said Augusta officials are searching only the east side of the mountain, in Augusta County, and have no reason to believe the man wandered into Highland at this point.
